From a press release issued July 2, 2008 from the president's office.

"It is very important to note that the visiting (accreditation) team had no recommendations related to the college’s student learning programs and services. This is quite unusual and indicates the visiting team’s very high assessment of Ohlone’s academic programs and student services,” President, Gari Browning said.

A second report due in March, 2009, will address four recommendations related to college planning and program review, as well as classified staff and management employee evaluation processes.

Browning indicated that plans are already underway to address these four recommendations. “The substance of these recommendations involves areas of improvement that are fairly common at community colleges," Browning said. "I am confident that these can be addressed to meet the Commission’s expectations.”

Kirshner's chess school bears wiz kid

Dr. Alan Kirshner not only teaches political science at Ohlone, but he also runs the Weibel Elementary School chess program. The program has recently made headlines due to one amazing seven-year-old girl named Alisha Chawla.

Chawla is currently the highest-rated female chess player for her age group in Northern California. She is fast becoming one of the best players in the country.

Kudos to Krishner and his efforts with the program.

Officer Stewart Dawson (#6) is Ohlone's resident wildlife photobug and we here at the Fac/Staff will regularly check in on his adventures.

We now have a family of skunks living on the Newark campus. I almost got sprayed by one the week before last, while patrolling the campus at night. I think we both surprised each other, but thankfully I saw the little guy soon enough to avoid having to take a tomato bath!

On the nights following, I saw the skunk again and again, but in different spots on campus. Last night, I figured out why I’d seen it so frequently and in so many places. We’ve got a whole family of ‘em!

I spotted five different skunks last night, and three of them in one location at one time. The family appears to consist of a mama, papa, and three juveniles. By the time I got the camera into action, only two of them were still in the same place. The picture quality isn’t great, but I got some decent close-ups of one of ‘em.

Observing the commotion from the safety of a nearby “no trespassing” sign was one of our burrowing owls. The owl let me get pretty close and photograph him, but the picture quality is pretty poor, and for that I apologize. I guess I’ll have to take one of Paul Mueller’s classes.

The Board says goodbye to Dr. Treadway

Last night was President Doug Treadway's final board meeting. Board President Garrett Yee and the other trustees honored Dr. Treadway for his service on the board and presented him with gifts. At the end of the evening, Treadway gave his final recommendations to the board.

Rene Gonzales (Student Affairs) and many others likes Subway on Mission Blvd across from Ohlone.

Sila Marques (Math, Science, and Technology) likes Claim Jumper when she has the time.

Kathleen Schoenecker (DSPS) winds up and McDonald's more than she would like to.

Ann Burdett (DSPS) and many other like the service and the food at Mission Jarrito.

Hal Griffin (Mail Room) along with many others likes Mission Pizza.

Debbie Trigg (EOPS) never gets out, but likes Red Lobster.

Mona Farley (Bookstore) likes The Elephant Bar.

Selena Sin (Cashier's Office) likes Seisho near the Mission post office.

Many people also mentioned Wok City and Zorba's Deli -- both are in Warm Springs.

Both Frank Hoang (Chemistry Instructor) and Selena Sin like the little known Chinese restaurant across from Ohlone, but neither knew the name of it. "Hometown Favorite Chinese Cuisine" is all I can read on the to-go menu, so that's what I'll call it -- even though I know better. You cannot see a sign from Mission Blvd, so pull into the parking lot and find it tucked away.

Editor's Picks (or Mostly In Defense of Irvington):

Z Pizza in Warm Springs. Really good pizza close to Wok City and Zorba's Deli.

Sala Thai #2 - It is in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by light industrial, but once you have the address, it is not hard to get to from Ohlone. Sorry to blanket statement here, but everything is good. And treat yourself to the Roti for dessert (those forks are just adorable aren't they?)

If you have time to travel to Warm Springs, you have time to travel to Irvington. When you get there, try any of these fine restaurants:

Dosa Place - Great Indian food, all vegetarian, good spice.

Taco Truck (La Perla) near the Irvington post office. Try the torta with pastor (marinated pork) or the chicken tacos. Best food in town. Cheap, quick, always the right decision.

Habibi - Really good Middle Eastern food near the Safeway. Everything from kebab sandwiches to vegetarian sample platers. Yum!

Carmen & Family BBQ - The menu is full of tasty food, but Southern food is slow and for a working lunch that doesn't work (go back later). Someday you must go down for lunch simply to get the sweet potato pie. The best in Fremont and a rival with any Bay Area S-P-pie. Wait... just pie for lunch? Yes!

Jan Blanchard - Be at Peace

Jan Blanchard passed away Friday morning. Blanchard was one of Ohlone's earliest employees and ran Ohlone's Purchasing Department. See our previous post.

The service will be held on Friday, June 13th at 10:30am at Fry Memorial Chapel located at 550 S. Central Avenue in Tracy, CA.

A Celebration of Life will follow at The Portuguese Hall located at 430 W. 9th Street -- 1 mile from the Fry Memorial chapel.

Mencher has solo show in Dallas, TX

The Dahlia Woods Gallery in Dallas, Texas is currently exhibiting paintings by Ohlone College's own Art professor, Kenney Mencher.

Mencher paints in the style of realism and bases much of his work on Film Noir.

Originally from New York, NY, Mencher earned an MA in Art History from the University of California, Davis. He then earned an MFA in painting from the University of Cincinnati in Ohio.

Before coming to Ohlone College, He taught at a number of institutions, including the University of Chicago and Texas A&M University.

His work has been shown in New Mexico, Rhode Island, Texas and several cities in California. Next up, Mencher will be a part of a two-person show at the Fort Collins Museum of Art in Colorado in March 2009.

Book drive to help children in Africa

Starting today, Thursday, May 8th, Faculty & Staff may donate unwanted books to Ohlone's honors society, Alpha Gamma Sigma in an effort to assist children in Africa. AGS will donate the books to Better World Books. The organization based out of Mishawaka, IN funds and supports literacy initiatives around the world.

Boxes will be placed under the AGS bulletin board outside the library, in the cafeteria, in Hyman Hall (upstairs and downstairs), and various other locations.

All books will be accepted, but AGS notes that textbooks and other educational books are needed most.

The book drive will continue through Friday, May 23rd.

Library gets larger budget with 50K for books

Great news for fellow bookworms employed at Ohlone; the library is getting more money for books!

According to the minutes from the Faculty Senate meeting on February 20, 2008, one planning agenda in the recent Accreditation Self Study focused on increasing the library's book fund from from$25K to $50K.

What's more, the minutes indicate that "this has been done." The result? $50K for books and $25K for periodicals.

Kudos to Shelby and Lora for their art!

Executive Assistant in the President's office, Shelby Foster won an Honorable Mention in the ASOC / LIFE club's Environmental Art Contest. Her collage of colorful, recycled materials -- made to resemble wildflowers on a hill -- got the most votes overall, though not in any one category.

"I thought it would be interesting and I wanted to try making an art project out of recycled paper," Foster said. "The project turned out to be a lot more work than I thought and it changed while I was making it, but it was a lot of fun. "

Lora Williams, a Peer Advisor in the CalWORKs department, won Best Overall.

"What inspired the drawing was my two daughters," Williams said. "I look at them a lot and wonder what the world will be like when they are adults and they have there own children."

Wishes of strength and hope to Jan Blanchard

Jan Blanchard, former Purchasing Director at Ohlone and one of the college's first employees, has developed pancreatic cancer.

We would like to wish her and her family all the best. We send our strength, resolve, fortitude and hope to her.

Blanchard was described by her friend Elaine Nagel as a "no nonsense lady who got things done. Her way." Nagel continued, "Some of the best equipment and furniture is still here because Jan knew (where) to get the best."

Blanchard currently lives with her daughter Nicole and her granddaughter Sherri.

Nagel is in contact with Blanchard's family. On Wednesday April 30 Nagel was told that Blanchard was comfortable. She had received a blood transfusion the day before which "helped her immensely," Nagel wrote in an email.

Departments will "cluster" together after Student Services Building is complete

Not only may your desk be under another roof when the Student Services Building opens, but thankfully, the people in your department may be closer... ah shucks.

According to minutes from the Faculty Senate meeting, the master plan for Ohlone's Fremont campus will soon initiate (carefully and slowly) what the senate and VP of Instruction, Jim Wright call "clustering."

We here at the FacStaff wanted to know more, so we asked Dr. Wright. Here's what he had to say:

"In 2004 the Board of Trustees approved master planning concepts for the Fremont Campus. This was in response to space on the Fremont Campus that would be opened up due to the addition of the Newark Campus and the new Student Services Building. The clustering concept for Fremont involves three academic areas. Two of these have had classrooms and labs in several different buildings and the idea of clustering is to bring their rooms together into one building.

"This involves the Science and Technology cluster in Building 8 and the Deaf Studies and ASL cluster in Building 6. The Physics Lab and the Engineering Lab will move from Building 6 to Building 8. The Deaf Studies and ASL classrooms and labs will move from Buildings 15, 5 and 1 to Building 6. The third academic area involved is the Fine and Performing Arts. They envision more of their classes being in Building 2 and trying to create more of a connection with the Smith Center.

"This is also part of the overall vision of the north entry to the campus becoming a third major gateway, with the old houses and portable buildings being removed and more parking added. This third gateway will be in addition to the south entry where the Student Service Building will be located and the exising up and down entry from the lower parking lots.

"One of the major planning concepts related to this is moving more parking to the upper campus level to create a north - south (flat!) pattern of foot traffic, in addition to the up-down pattern from the lower lots."

You might want to sit down for this... but not for very long.

Faculty & Staff are invited to learn about back pain Friday May 2 from noon until 1:00 pm in Room 1407 on the Fremont campus.

Instructor of Physical Education, Kaylene Buteau will host the Brown Bag seminar. Those who attend will learn how to reduce back pain with proper body mechanics and workstation set up. The seminar will also demonstrate exercises that employees can do during the work day to help reduce back pain.

Yummy refreshments will be available, as will even yummier flex credits.

Bookstore Recycles more than 10,000 pounds

Bookstore Manager, Mona Farley says the bookstore just recycled 41 cartons of books. At 45 pounds each a handsome 1,845 pounds of material was recycled.

Assistant Director of Buildings & Grounds, Manmohan Gill had even more good news.

"Our bookstore recycled 11,010 pounds of books in the last reporting year which ended on March 31st," Gill wrote.

Faculty & Staff may get new PCs in 2008/2009

During the College Council meeting held on April 4 the Technology Committee said they were working on a PC Replacement Program proposal (see .pdf link below).

According to the minutes, the proposal recommends dividing up computer needs by 1) faculty, 2) staff, and 3) classroom/lab replacement.

Joanne Schultz will make sure there is a line item in the 08/09 budget for the new computers.

The .pdf document linked here is a draft and the committee will welcome input from all faculty and staff.

Someone in attendance that day asked about what Ohlone does to recycle or dispose of obsolete computers. George Rodgers was invited to speak to the council on May 5 and report on the sustainability policy for disposing of computers.

The next College Council meeting will be May 5 from 3:00pm - 4:30pm in Room 1307 on the Fremont campus.

Browning picked by Ohlone Board

During their scheduled meeting tonight, the Ohlone Board of Trustees officially named Dr. Gari Browning as the candidate they hope will become the next President of the district. Browning would replace Dr. Douglas Treadway after he retires this year. Browning is currently the VP of Instruction at College of the Desert in the city of Palm Desert, CA.

Fon & Waters play at Jackson Theater

Transfer Center Specialist Frances Fon performed with Cheesecake Diva (yes, the ice cream flavor) on April 20 during the first annual Sing Xuan Singing Competition in the Jackson Theater. The group covered “What Hurts the Most,” by Rascal Flatts and “You’re Beautiful” by James Blunt. Fon and her old college friends have played at weddings and anniversaries.

"I always appreciate the opportunity to preform," she said, "even though I still get nervous."

Fon finds music therapeutic.

"I love my job, but I also like having that outlet," Fon said. Fon also helped judge the competition that night and was pleased with the performances.

“(I was) very proud of every contestant," she said.

EOPS counselor Mzao Waters' heavy metal band, Mukagee, performed three songs, employing a full arsenal of deafening guitar riffs, rapid fire drum work and seismic bass lines. The performance was a departure from the night’s mellow mood.

Editor's Note: While working for the Monitor for two semesters I realized something grand. I then spoke with Bill Parks and had my "epiphany" confirmed. The Monitor is geared toward a rather transient student body. The people who really read the paper (the people who care most about campus news) are the people who work here.
